Your trip to Athens cost HOW much?!

Updated: Sep 24, 2024

Here’s the lowdown on how much 5 nights in Athens for 2 people cost us.

All ticketed activities are included in this cost, and we always have a bit of a buffer for each trip [around £50] for contingency. For transparency, I have a 12 month travel insurance policy with Puffin Insurance, and so I do not include this cost in any of my trip budgets as it was paid for separately.

Flights and Transport: £189

We flew from London Stansted to Athens with Ryanair, and then caught the ferry to Mykonos as we were continuing our trip. However I have included a return flight back to the UK into this budget instead, for those of you looking to visit Athens on its own! The ferry was cheaper anyway and so if you are looking to explore the rest of Greece afterwards, the cost would be lower!

I always use Skyscanner to find the best flights for my trips, as they display flights with all airlines, so it makes it super easy to find the best deal.

That being said, when flying long haul I'd recommend either flying with the same airlines regularly to build up Air Miles & Frequent Flyer Points, or opening up multiple cards and accounts so you can always capitalise on the best deals! More on that can be found here.

Accommodation: £380

We stayed in a beautiful loft apartment called 5inAthens, the location was PERFECT.

It was right opposite The Clumsies cocktail bar, and also in the heart of Monastiraki - walkable to everything.

It had a patio which we had endless glasses of wine and cold cuts on, and it also came with a bathtub inside the bedroom!

£380 for 5 nights [£76 per night] was an absolute steal. We did stay right after Covid, and so this might have impacted the price, but we would have happily have paid more!

Daily spend: £432

The daily spend includes food, drinks, miscellaneous items such as sun cream, plasters, souvenirs etc. For reference, we ate out for lunch and dinner everyday, and grabbed a pastry and coffee to-go each morning. The places we went to ranged from cheap ‘grab and go’ eateries to boujie restaurants.

Activities: £106

I always like to book my activities in advance so I can relax during the trip knowing I don’t have to faff around booking things. Most things are always flexible should I need to cancel or change them, and it just means I can really maximise my time in each place.

Activities that were booked and paid for in Athens were tickets to the Acropolis, the Panathenaic stadium and the Lycabettus Hill Cable Car.

I'll typically use Get Your Guide or Viator to book my activities, but I've put together a list of a few other tour operators here!

Total Cost: £1,107

Average cost per day: £221.40 // pp £110.70

Considering the amount of things we did, food we ate, and coffees/cocktails drank, we were pretty happy with our spend in Athens! This was for 5 nights and 5 days including a nice and super central apartment, transport in and out of Athens, and all activities!

There are many factors that could increase or decrease the total cost, of which a few are:

- The time of year you visit

- What your priorities are for your trip [eating out, sightseeing etc]

- Your travel style [hostel, hotel, villa etc]

- How far in advance you book

- What sites you use to book

We would NOT be able to plan a trip without our trusted budget spreadsheet. It helps us see what we can (and can't) afford, whilst also helping us see how much we need to save each week to be able to do everything we want!

All our trips are self funded and saved for whilst working full time! To see how we budget and save for our trips and to get a copy of our spreadsheets, head to our budgets page!
