Weekends away from Sydney

V Adventures

Sydney has enough to keep you busy for a LONG time. However, there are so many places within a 2 hour drive that are definitely worth going for a weekend away.

1. Blue Mountains

The ‘Blueys’ are only a 2 hour drive from Sydney, which in Australia can be considered a luxury. However they’re also super accessible via train, and so don’t worry if you don’t have a car! The Blue Mountains is home to the Three Sisters and the world’s steepest train! But why are they called the Blue Mountains?

Well Scenic World has explained it perfectly...

Eucalyptus oil droplets emitted from the forests combine with dust particles and water vapour, scattering short wavelength rays of light which are predominantly blue in colour.

There are so many things to see and experience in the Bluey’s, from hikes and walks to drinks and ‘theme parks’!

Things to do

  • Echo Point Lookout

  • Scenic World (where you’ll find the cableway and the train!)

  • Honeymoon Bridge - where you’ll be on the first of the Three Sisters!

  • Mountain Culture Beer Co

  • Katoomba Falls

  • Three Sisters

2. The Hunter Valley

The ‘Wine Country’ is also a 2 hour drive from Sydney, and is home to over 150 cellar doors. Of course you must drink as much wine and eat as much cheese as possible, but there is so much more to see and do whilst you’re there!

Things to do

I’d recommend staying somewhere central to all of the action as if you are wine tasting, you will certainly not be driving to and from the cellar doors! Both times I have visited I’ve always stayed at the Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, and I could not recommend enough!

For those of you who are more into beer than wine, 'the Hunter' also has you covered!

3. Central Coast

The Cenny Coast is the closest location for a weekend away from Sydney, at a 1 hour drive, making it great for a break!

Here are some things to fill your weekend in the Central Coast!

Things to do

  • Bouddi National Park - it’s great for coastal walks, hidden bays and camping spots

  • The Entrance

  • Beaches - Avoca, Shelly and Putty

  • Crackneck Point Lookout - you might just see some Whales!

4. Wollongong

If you still want the city and beach vibes of Sydney, but want a change of pace and place, head to Wollongong. It’s just over an hour drive, and you can also get the train that will take you around the same time. It’s got a lot going on and is a great spot to visit for a weekend [it’s also a popular place to live!].

Things to do

  • Nan Tien Temple - this is honestly mind blowing

  • Sea Cliff Bridge

  • Botanical Gardens

  • Port Kembla Beach

For weekends a little closer to home, check out some things to do in Sydney itself!
